Toxic Audio Wins Drama Desk Award May 17, 02004 @ 03:53:56 PM The Off-Broadway production, TOXIC AUDIO, which has been garnering strong praise from audiences each night at the John Houseman Theater, picked up praise from their peers at the 49th Annual Drama Desk Awards at LaGuardia Concert Hall at Lincoln Center. The show won the award for "Best Unique Theatrical Experience." Producer Eric Krebs accepted the award on behalf of the show. The five-member cast of Toxic Audio accompanied him on stage where cast member Paul Sperrazza uniquely displayed his excitement with a backflip. Rene Ruiz, who brought together the five distinct vocalists who make up Toxic Audio back in 1998, and also directed this Off-Broadway debut said, "It is so satisfying to have reached a point in our show's journey where our hard work is rewarded. Now the work for us is to get as many people as we can to see and hear for themselves why the Drama Desk voters recognized our show in this way. We are truly thrilled by this." Prior to receiving their award, TOXIC AUDIO was also the first musical performer of the evening. They presented a high-energy and crowd-pleasing performance of "Turn The Beat Around." The five vocalists in TOXIC AUDIO use no instruments other than the human voice to create complex sonic textures, rhythmic drumbeats, thumping bass lines and searing guitar-like solos in their performance of contemporary pop songs, timeless classics, jazz-scat and vocally-orchestrated original compositions. TOXIC AUDIO is being presented by The John Houseman Theater Center in association with Castle Talent, Inc. The John Houseman Theater Center is part of New York City's famous "Theater Row" and is located at 450 West 42nd Street between 9th & 10th Avenues. TOXIC AUDIO features the varied talents of Jeremy James, Shalisa James, Rene Ruiz, Paul Sperrazza and Michelle Mailhot-Valines. Sound design is by John A. Valines III, scenic and lighting design is by Peter R.
