http://www.dotmusic.com/news/December2002/news27732.asp Who do you believe in the hype wars? We're told Coldplay were great and they proved it time and time again in 2002. We were also told that The Vines were the best thing since sliced bread. It's been another intriguing year in 'indie' but one that's lacked a really great band that have pushed the envelope. Where are Radiohead when you need them? Still, there was some great music as you'll see from our awards below. - Best newcomer: The Coral Without mentioning the 'S' word, Liverpool's most talented new band have been nothing short of a sensation this year without bursting the hazy bubble they occupy. Even the Gallagher's wouldn't have been as cheeky to shamelessly pillage 60s music the way The Coral have but with a cocky swagger they get away with it. - Comeback of the year: Coldplay What hasn't been said to describe Coldplay's impact on 2002? It's been their year without question from the seminal Glastonbury headlining slot to the wondrous 'Rush Of Blood...' album. All hail Coldplay. - Act of the year: Queens Of The Stone Age Like Coldplay, the Queens have given us some truly memorable live performances (Glastonbury with Dave Grohl was an obvious highlight) and an album that will long outlive the end of year polls. The only thing that's missing is mass appeal. You sense they could give a f**k. - Man of the year: Wayne Coyne (The Flaming Lips) He might be from another planet but Coyne is without question one of the most interesting frontman in music today. If anyone writes better lyrics or gives a better interview than we haven't heard of them. - Woman of the year: Bjork It was the Icelandic queen's greatest hits year and what a celebration it was. Still truly unique after all these years and when you hear some of her best tracks back to back you prays she keeps going for years to come. - Album of the year: Queens Of The Stone Age - 'Songs For The Deaf' Listen to this album at high volume and you'll see what we mean. - Single of the year: The Flaming Lips - 'Do You Realize' The Queens narrowly pipped the 'Lips to the album prize so they'll have to settle for this as a consolation. A speculate piece of music that'd win in any year. - Live act of the year: The Flaming Lips A well kept secret until recently, the 'Lips live show is more of a spectacular of light and sound than a mere concert. Musicians dressed as bunnies, Wayne popping massive balloons full of glitter, giant projections and hand puppets. You get the picture. As for the music... (see above). - Most irritating single of the year: Every note by the pop idol's/rivals - Worst album of the year: The Vines - 'Highly Evolved' More the most overrated album of the year. Read this and digest: The Vines are not the future of rock n'roll. They are a competent indie rock band who have yet to master playing live. If they haven't even done this yet, there's simply no way they can deserve such acclaim. - Loser of the year: Craig Nicholls (The Vines) Craig wins partly because of the above but more importantly because of his immature, look-at-me-I'm-so-f-ing-tortured-you-don't-understand- my-pain-pass-me-another-burger manner. Get a grip. You're a disgrace! And stop reading your own press. - Most sorely missed: Invention and imagination in guitar music - Bubbling under in 2002: Doves Despite the critical acclaim they've gained for both their albums to date, Doves are still largely unknown by Joe Public. Does this really matter? Not if they keep making music like this. Hands off. - Most eagerly anticipated in 2003: The return of Blur How will the departure of Coxon affect the band? Have they still got what it takes? Will Damon's adventure with Gorillaz ruin the Blur magic? We'll find out soon enough. Not a bad year then. Here's to celebrating 2002 and looking forward to 2003. See you in 12 months time then for more of the same.
