CAT POWER New Full-Length 『THE GREATEST』 RELEASE DATE: 24, January, 2006 (World-wide) ___________________________________________________________________ Matador Records試聽網址在下方我們的好友喵力Chan Marshall (a.k.a Cat Power)將會在一月二十四日全球發行，她三年來的唯一一張全新的創作『The Greatest』 (並不是精選集唱片)，離她的上一張非常受樂評界和商業界好評的專輯『You Are Free』剛好滿三年。 You Are Free ___________________________________________________________________ 『You Are Free』在發行當時因為Chan巡迴台灣和日本的原因，讓台灣成為世界第一個發行『You Are Free』的國家，隨著當時爆滿的演出，在發行當時也造成轟動，登上了幾乎台灣許多比較主要大型唱片行西洋榜的后座。而在當年年終更在許多傳媒的好評下，不但CNN為她做了專題特輯，『You Are Free』更順利在當年成為全球最受注目的專輯唱片之一。而當年除了奪下美國Neumu年度最佳專輯冠軍和英國Drowned in Sound年終最佳專輯的第三名，其餘入選當年十大年度最佳專輯的還包括英美的主要傳媒The Wire, Rolling Stone (美、英、澳三國都入選), Stylus , Entertainment Weekly, No Ripcord , Rough Trade, The Badger Herald , Rockerilla. 在入選當年年度最佳專輯的部份的還包括Pitchfork, Eye Weekly, Village Voice, NME, PopMatters, Amazon.com, Uncut, Spin, Mojo, LostAtSea, E!, Canadian Critics Poll, Prefix, Washington City Pape, 幾乎無一不缺席。在歐陸方面Popnews(法國)、Zundfunk(德國)、Les Inrockuptibles(法國) Sentire Ascoltare(意大利)、Rockerilla (意大利)、Rock de Lux (西班牙)、Intro (德國)、Iguana (西班牙)、Blowup (意大利)、Musica (意大利 )、Screenagers (波蘭)也入選當年年度十大或是年度唱片，而在南半球澳洲和紐西蘭更是如此，幾乎是所有的獨立音樂和另類音樂年終榜單上無一缺席。而因為幾乎完全售窟一票難求的澳洲巡迴，更讓You Are Free成為Matador Records在澳洲有史以來最賣座的一張唱片，在北美更奪下Billboard雜誌獨立榜七週亞軍和新人榜九週冠軍的商業亮眼成績。除了商業成績亮眼外，更由Chemical Brothers的提名，讓她入圍美國最重要的獨立音樂獎項之一的Shortlist Awards最後的finalist，還差點成為最後一個和Johnny Cash合作的人，可以說是她目前生涯的高峰，一點都不為過。 THE GREATEST ___________________________________________________________________ 而這次Chan把她自己放逐到了Memphis，找來了Stuart Sikes當制作人，而誰是Stuart Sikes呢？其實圈內人都知道他原本就是個蠻有名的Mixer和Engin- eer，尤其是在最近一些獨立藝人，大敲主流門的代表作品(當然不一定是樂團代表作，而是成功敲主流門的作品)，都是出自他手錄的，像是The White Stripes的『White Blood Cells』、Loretta Lynn的『Van Lear Rose』、M- odest Mouse的『Good News for People Who Love Bad News』或是Slowride 二月將要發行的新唱片『C/S』，但是我比較喜歡的其實是他，近十年前幫 Dave Shouse的樂團Those Bastard Souls，打開獨立音樂知名度的第一張唱片『21st Century Chemical』 (我到現在都還一直有在聽)，而還有另外一張印像比較深刻的是Rocket from the Crypt (唉!我小時後的愛團前陣子解散了) 的『Group Sounds』！！！而更有趣的是在Memphis她找來了和她以前完全不同圈子裡的藍調和靈魂的錄音室的樂手來錄這次的新唱片『The Greatest』，找來了Al Green早期全盛時期的吉他手Teenie Hodges(當然這是大家都在講的，因為他最有名，也曾經是超級女伶Ann Peebles的指名首度樂手)，還有曾經是藍調吉他英雄派 Luther Allison樂團的貝斯手 David Smith，最難得的是Booker T.的鼓手 Steve Potts，The Radio Kings的Rick Steff彈鋼琴和Trumpet手Scott Thompson，而其實我最期待的反而是Jim Spake (他曾經是Tav Falco巡迴的專屬薩克斯風手，而說到Tav Falco！我看過他的現場表演，喔買尬！屌到翻天，讓我完全不禁懷疑Jon Spencer，根本就是百分之三千和他偷來的，還有 Jim Spake現場的薩克斯風也是，屌到翻天)，而結果就是她一月二十四號要發行的新唱片『The Greatest』。其實我還蠻期待她的新唱片的，其實我對別人嘴巴裡說的好不好聽，什麼進步或是退步，我其實真的一點興趣都沒有，我只希望我喜歡的藝人能永遠做一張誠實的唱片，我覺得誠實是一件非常重要的事，就像我不久前去看日本的Maher Shalal Hash Baz雖然幾乎是狀況百出，但是重點是你幾乎找不到如此誠實的團體了，幾乎是去年我看過最令我感動的團體了，Kudo就是完全不花任何的力氣就讓你感動至極，或是像Saul Williams一樣，我還蠻希望Cat Power的新的一張唱片是一張誠實的唱片，因為其實我覺得雖然『You Are Free』幾乎舉世愛載，但是其實我覺得好像少了點什麼，我其實真的如此的想，我其實最喜歡的還是她的『Moon Pix』，非常的真實非常的迷人，而 Pitchfork也給了『The Greatest』的title track近滿分的四星半的評價，其實基於的理由大概也是如此，就是因為她的真，雖然我從來都不太屑 Pitchfork。 WILLIE DEADWILDER ___________________________________________________________________ Chan完全沒有停止的整整六年巡迴，無預警的突然成名，還有兩次巨大的感情劇變(還有一次分手是在台灣飛機場)，瘋狂的酗酒還差點讓Chan曾有產生過無數次自殺的念頭，直到現在都還在服抗憂鬱藥，讓所有許多她的友人和歌迷們(尤其是朋友們，包括兩年前來台的JSBX的吉他手Judah)，都不禁為她真的打從心底擔心起來，我一次我記得她在雪梨，她在滿滿售罄的兩千樂迷前，兩個小時只唱了完整的兩首歌，台下有人一直大叫『賤女人，還我錢來』！最後她還是ㄍ一ㄥ了兩小時，最後看的台上的人很難過，台下的也很難過，但是的確的，我想她一定更難過的，在事後還裝的不難過，但是我們都知道其實她是很難過的。而在這短短一兩年多的時間裡，Chan來了墨爾本四次(包括一次由Nick Cave 本人的邀請，來當Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds的暖場)，我漸漸的看到了她真正一步步的走出了傷痛，而其實在她在澳洲最賣座的那次巡迴(其實也是她狀況最糟的那一次)，他曾經在短短一兩天內售罄她在澳洲境內十八場的演出，幾乎怎麼加場都是在極短的時間內就sold out，其實只有一場是好到我永遠難忘的(當時是有整個樂團的，那時的吉他手是Matt Sweeney)，我記得當時她在安可的最後翻唱了一首Otis Redding 的『These Arms Of Mine』，那般的真實，好像輕輕觸碰就會流血般的一樣的脆弱且真實，Chan的樂團在台上彈奏，Chan拿著麥克風跳下舞台，完全用頭髮蓋住臉的陰暗，淚流滿面的跪倒在人群中，我還是覺得那是我當年在看現場表演，最另我難忘的一首歌吧，而在這幾次和她喝了無數次的酒，我還是覺得她是我見過最真的人之一，有時常常會覺得有不知道怎麼辦的惶恐，只是在當時我覺得Chan的真實是危險的，好像是自毀式的危險，在幾次下來她真正見到一步步的走出了傷痛，反而感覺她的真實是疲累的(雖然她越來表演的越好Orz)，體驗後的真實，從很累很累中走出來的真實，那種很誠實的感覺，她在去年發了一張DVD和CD ，DVD說實話我實在無法昧著我的良心說好看，因為實在蠻難看的，而 Matador其實真的蠻厲害的，還可以說的非常非常的藝術，但是說實話其實真的擺明是騙錢的(要相信我那覺對不是肯德雞！)，但是重點是那張CD裡其實只有一首歌，很長很長很長的歌共十八分鐘十八秒，而背景音樂就是M Ward 彈木吉他，其實整首歌音樂只有一段，然後一直一直重複，而Chan就一直一直唱、一直一直唱，整首歌光是歌詞就有一千兩百四十個字，她就一直一直唱、一直一直唱，唱到最後她唱著說著下面這段 This is a four hour song And it will go on and on A moment in time traveling on even if it is too long I don't care I love to share I love to sing along I know you do too Feel the same way so come along Sing your song It's all that you have to do 我聽到這段眼淚幾乎從眼眶飆出來，這雖然是一首很長的歌，但並不是一首像史詩或是感人故事的歌，因為它太平凡了而Chan又真的太真實了，還有那種直到的中心，幾乎是對所有Cat Power疑問的解答，尤其是那段 "And it will go on and on………A moment in time traveling on even if it is too long……I don't care". 對我來說那幾乎是我覺得Chan一輩子最好聽的歌，尤其是知道她當時所經歷到人生的一個階段，而再寫這首歌，我從來沒有見過如此的事或是人，她就一直一直的反複著，好像永遠永遠都不會完般，對我來說那是她一輩子寫的最好的一首歌，而且因為時間和背景，我並不覺得她將會再有能力，甚至於在有同等的才華，唱出或是做出，她和M Ward 當時做的事，而另外是因為M Ward實在太了解Chan了，一段完全一直重覆的吉他，卻有完全高低起伏完全的情感，那的確是我那一年聽過最感動的一首歌，甚至於是Cat Power有史以來最棒的一首歌，完全就因為這首歌一字一句的都太真實了。而在『The Greatest』的確在這張唱片中隱約的真實的在Where Is My Love 和The Greatest中聽的到她漸漸走出來的真實體驗，也更誠實的面對自己，而Willie Deadwilder也被收入在裡面，變成五分多鐘的版本(變的更完美了，但是就沒有原來那版本的真了Orz)！而這張唱片有一些橋段聽起來感覺像 Beachwood Sparks的『Once We Were Trees』，但是唱的調調基本上就南轅北轍了！ Chan 的唱片公司Matador Records和澳洲Remote Control Records，在Mysp- ace放了Cat
