First, he dictates his choice for his favourite sampler, the Akai s3000XL. Akai is the staple choice of the modern-day studio; it is renowned for its simple architecture and crisp drum breaks, in contrast to its main rival, the 'Emu' with its heavy-duty filter and resonance capabilities. He also talks us through MIDI sequencer packages such as 'Logic' and 'Cubase'; which, in essence, are programs that display all your sampling and sound data in a visual colour coded format on your computer for ease of use and organisation purposes. "I have always used an Akai s3000XL. This is a very personal choice, though. The edge for Akai, I think, is that the beats sound harder, I just get a vibe with this sampler. This is just my opinion though; someone else might think I am talking rubbish! Personally, though, I have always used it and am happy with it; I have always been an Akai-man. I know there are a lot of different filters in the Emu, I'm just learning it at the moment; trying to get my head round it. In some ways I think it is easier, and in some ways I think it is harder." "I have always used a big Mackie mixing desk. A PC or a Mac, too. The sequencer: Cubase. The only time I have ever used Logic is with other people, but I have to learn it properly! For bass sounds I have a good internal soft-synth, a good Roland one and a good Trinity one. When making music, though, most of the time I work with samples. I sample a lot of bits and pieces from old records, as is the trend right now."
