The funeral of Army conscript Hong Chong-qiu took place in Taichong yesterday.
Angry protesters and family members blocked President Ma Ying-jeou as he
tried to enter the funeral venue.
Ma and his entourage were finally allowed to pay their respects - but only
after borough chief - Xie Rei-de - kneeled down in front of the crowd and
begged them to make way for the president.
Meanwhile ...
Military prosecutors yesterday released a third death certificate for Hong
Chong-qiu -- this time listing homicide as the reason for the conscript's
July 4-th death.

Tai-Power - yesterday said it is confident about the structural safety of the
controversial fourth nuclear power plant in New Taipei City.
According to the state-generator .... U-S contractor General Electric is
working on the project, and Tai-Power has confidence in the company's
professional competence.
Company officials say, G-E has been asked to push Tai-Power's downstream
vendors harder to improve their efficiency and problem-solving skills.
The statement comes as lawmakers remain deadlocked over a proposed referendum
on the future of the plant.

for human use are being distributed to designated hospitals and local

10AM INTERNATIONAL NEWS
In world news....
A series of attacks across Iraq yesterday killed 15 people, including a
random shooting and the killing of a judge.
The deadliest attack took place late last night when gunmen in a speeding car
opened fire randomly on a gathering of people in the city of Kirkuk, killing
four people and wounding three.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks, though
security forces and civilians are frequently targeted by al-Qaida's Iraq
branch.

Egypt's highest security body warned yesterday that the clock is ticking for
a peaceful end to the standoff over sit-ins by supporters of ousted President
Mohammed Morsi.
More than a month after the military overthrew Morsi, thousands of the
Islamist leader's supporters remain camped out in two main crossroads in
Cairo demanding his reinstatement.
While diplomats raced to find a compromise, the Egyptian interim government
signaled that its patience with the pro-Morsi sit-ins was running out.
The National Defence Council says any negotiated resolution would not shield
from legal proceedings what it called ``law-breakers'' and others who incite
against the state.
------------------------
U.S. diplomatic posts in 19 cities in the Muslim world will be closed at
least through the end of this week.
A State Department spokesperson says the decision to keep the embassies and
consulates closed is "not an indication of a new threat."
The U.S. has also decided to reopen some posts today, including those in
Afghanistan, and Baghdad.
The State Department also announced a global travel alert this past weekend,
warning that al-Qaida or its allies might target either U.S. government or
private American interests.
-------------------------
Morocco's king rescinded his pardon of a Spanish pedophile yesterday after an
unusual bout of protests in the case. It was the first time in recent memory
that a Moroccan sovereign had reversed a pardon.
The king says he would not have pardoned the Spaniard if he had been aware of
his crimes.
Hundreds of peaceful demonstrators gathered late Friday to rally against the
pardon - a rare protest against the king. The demonstration was broken up by
police with clubs, leaving at least 63 people injured.
