Jewel's Got The Beat On New Album
Singer/songwriter Jewel is delving into dance music and jazz on
her as-yet-untitled next album, due June 3 from Atlantic. The
first evidence of this new sound is the single "Intuition,"
which will be shipped next week to U.S. radio outlets. The cut
was co-written and produced by Lester Mendez, best known for
his work with Enrique Iglesias and Shakira.
Last November, Jewel got her first taste of dance music success
when remixes of her song "Serve the Ego" improbably reached No.
1 on Billboard's Dance Music/Club Play chart. "I loved hip-hop
and rap when I was first exposed to it in the '80s," the artist
said in a statement. "I loved the beats, and I loved the
artists who had the ability to be very lyrical with those
beats. I also like the hypnotic nature of dance music; there is
something very primordial about it."
She continued, "The tone of some of the new songs also leans
towards jazz. So you are going to hear my love of all these
types of music on the new album, and I tried to combine them in
a way that makes sense. You have folk melodies against hip-hop
beats against a French accordion against hand-clapping and
whistling solos. But it still really sounds like me."
Posting earlier this week on her official Web site, Jewel
wrote, "I was worried at first, [because] all our demos were
done on computers, so they all sounded too electronic, but now
that we have live drums, live bass and acoustic guitars, and
yes, even a whistling solo (performed by yours truly), it
sounds much more organic, while still maintaining its fruity
bouquet."
The new album is the follow-up to 2001's "This Way," which
debuted at No. 9 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 1.49 million
copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. Jewel is
expected to undertake an extensive tour later this year.
