Vega Takes 'Best' On The Road In conjunction with Tuesday's (April 22) A&M/Universal release of "Retrospective: The Best of Suzanne Vega," the veteran singer/songwriter will hit the road next week in the U.S. The run will kick off in Annapolis, Md., the day after the compilation is issued, and last through a May 31 show in Philadelphia. Vega will welcome summer during a brief European tour, beginning June 17 at Budapest's Open Air Festival. She'll return to the U.S. for a handful of dates latter in the season, with a July 26 Jacksonville, Fla., gig and an Aug. 1 Las Vegas show already on her schedule. The 21-track "Retrospective" covers Vega's entire catalog, from her 1985 debut to her 2001 album "Songs in Red and Grey." It also includes rare material, as well as liner notes from Patti Smith Group guitarist Lenny Kaye, who produced her first two albums. As the compilation will end her recording contract with A&M, Vega recently told Billboard's Jim Bessman that she'll "take stock" of future plans in the fall. "I write slowly -- even at my best," she said. "I'd like to write more, but it's hard to write and be on the road, so I'll dig in and put down some roots in the fall." In other news, Vega is also the host of "American Mavericks," a Web-accessible 13-part Minnesota Public Radio series in association with the San Francisco Symphony. Based on the symphony's concert festival of the same name, the weekly one-hour series features the music and stories of visionary composers who influenced the development of American music. "It covers American classical composers from the late 1700s up to Philip Glass, Laurie Anderson, and Frank Zappa," Vega said. "I'm considered a folk musician, but at the same time I have my own maverick qualities in terms of pushing the envelope with ideas not usually found in folk music and crossing over to a broader audience. I also represent a person who doesn't know a lot about classical music, but wants to." Here are Suzanne Vega's upcoming tour dates: April 23: Annapolis, Md. (Ramshead) April 26: Albany, N.Y.
