The Best of Jon Brion Jon Brion is one of my favorite living musicians. This dude has produced and played on records with countless artists (Eels, Elliot Smith, Aimee Mann) as well as scored several films (Magnolia, I Heart The Huckabees). In today's post I've listed what I think are Brion's best solo songs as well as the best songs from his collaborations with other artists. When you listen to these five songs together you'll definitely get a sense of what Jon Brion "sounds" like. Brad Mehldau - "When It Rains." This song is currently my most played on Audioscrobbler. I go into these OCD fueled binges when I find a song that I like and this one's like crack. Think Bill Evans meets the big screen, i.e. piano with no vocals just pure magnified emotion transmitted through gifted fingers. Everytime I hear Mehldau and co. return to the head at 5:14 I am almost brought to tears. Fiona Apple - "Extraordinary Machine." This is from the version of Extraordinary Machine that Fiona and her label decided not to release. I haven't heard the version that actually made it to stores but I highly doubt it can surpass the original. Brion manages to transform Fiona's trite "empowered female" lyrics into something almost avant-garde with the light-hearted cinematic production on this song. I'll admit Fiona's voice holds its own here. Kanye West - "Gone" ft Cam'ron and Consquence. I'd post this but knowing Kanye I'd probably get sued, for all two of you out there who haven't heard this contender for song of the year you can listen to it here. Jon Brion - "I Believe She's Lying." This song starts off like a Chad Hugo/Neptunes song which makes me yearn for a Brion/Kenna collabo. Brion shines not only musically but also lyrically on this track: I believe she's lying I trust her to undermine my faith in her, in time I have every confidence that she'll dismantle mine Given time It should be noted that "I Believe She's Lying" is only the second best song on Brion's solo album Meaningless, number one being "Ruin My Day." Jon Brion - "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Theme." What can I say about this? I wasn't as big a fan of the movie as most people but this theme is absolutely heartbreaking, and breaking hearts is a skill. Do yourself a favor and buy JB's self-released album Meaningless!
