LE TIGRE ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR A DVD
by Jen Sabella
It's hard to believe that it's been more than ten years since Kathleen Hanna
formed the feminist dance/punk sensation Le Tigre. It seems like just yester-
-day I was in my friend Stephanie's car, blaring "Deceptacon" and dancing in
the front seat. Who cares if we missed homeroom?
When Hanna, Johanna Fateman and JD Samson decided to take a breather in 2006,
many of us were seriously bummed, but the ladies took to their Myspace page
last week to remind us that A: They have not broken up and B: They are re-
-leasing a DVD about Le Tigre.
The band initially mentioned the DVD idea in 2007 on their website:
"We are each doing all kinds of stuff, and we've even started to talk about
making some kind of crazy DVD/live album with all of the video footage and
recordings we have from our shows!"
According to a blog post by Hanna, the DVD should be out by next year, but
may not include any new material:
"Will we ever write another album? I don't know. Will we ever play a show
again? I don't know. But I still feel like Jo and JD are my bandmates, so to
me, that means we are still a band even if all we are doing at the moment is
making a DVD. I know it sounds cheesy to say "we're on hiatus" maybe "sab-
-batical" would be a better word."
Despite the "sabbatical," the Le Tigre ladies have been keeping quite busy.
JD has been DJing all over the place, dating Sia and working with her new
band, MEN. JD and Johanna originally started MEN in 2007 as a DJ duo, but JD
has since teamed up with a queer New York artists collective called LTTR to
become a "band and art/performance collective that focuses on the energy of
live performance and radical potential of dance music." They will hit the
road for a European tour this month.
Always the activist, Kathleen has been working as a mentor for a group of
former Willie Mae Rock Camp girls, worked on a piece for the Chelsea Museum
with artist Becca Albee that focused on New York City women's post-9/11
"feelings about fear and being prepared," and teaching an art class at NYU.
She also mentioned "spinning around my room in a long flowery skirt while
watching Jill Clayburgh in It's My Turn."
Johanna is still running Seagull, a hair salon in NYC, and just had a baby
girl named Goldie last month. She's not a part of MEN for now, but still puts
her 2 cents in sometimes.
We don't know if or when the band's "sabbatical" will be over, but will
certainly keep you posted on the upcoming DVD, which is sure to be full of
roller skate jams for the ladies and the fags, yeah - sorry, I couldn't help
myself.
