Holiday Luncheon 2005
Dear Friends,
Friday was our annual celebration of the season, on stage in Valencia at
crew lunch. Because of the hectic filming schedule, lunch was at 5:00 pm, so we
arrived early to say hello to as many as we could before they had to eat and
return to the set.
Sara and the production office was first; our production coordinator also
held that position at "JAG" for many years, and it's always fun to visit an old
friend. She was surrounded by gift packages (haven't opened mine yet, from
the producers and the cast) and slowly everyone started to drift in, back
from local location.
Tony! I yelled at Michael and laughed, "I've been on this show too long! The
fans have a question I promised to ask: Does Gibbs really hit you...?"
"Yes," he answered. "But I'll let you in on a secret: between Season One and
Season Three, he doesn't hit as hard in rehearsals any more."
Sean walked in, looking handsome and happy. We congratulated him on his
recent wedding and asked if he'd heard from the foks. (Don and Viv are on a
well-deserved vacation, as we both agreed.)
Rehearsal for the next scene was called, so we decided to go to my favorite
place: wardrobe. (Second favorite: Saks is first.) Walking across the
lot, I heard my name called. It was Cote, who embraced me in a warm welcome.
(I had only met her once before, in July when she filmed her first scene on
the back lot of Universal Studios. How special of her to remember me.)
We had to walk through the Squad Room stage, where the cast was rehearsing,
to get to wardrobe. Mark, who had greeted us earlier, offered me his
Director's Chair so I could watch through the open door. At a break, Suzanne, our
Script Supervisor, was kind enough to lead us through the maze to the new digs
for costumes, since we had to give up our old space.
We said a hasty hello to Paul Dafelmair, our Costume Supervisor, who always
answered my "JAG" questions, and always seems to be in a hurry (no wonder;
lotsa people to clothe). We greeted Rachel, Women's Costume Supervisor, who
answers the questions you all have re Ziva's outfits and Abby's t-shirts, and
ooh'd and aah'd at all her feminine goodies (a wonderful carpet bag, a
marvelous tapestry coat...gotta go back soon). We were interrupted by another
greeting from Mark and I suddenly remembered I had brought a photo we had taken
together during the first season's lunch. I asked him to sign it for me.
I offered him a pen, but he insisted on using a "special" one. "With the
disappearing ink?" I teased. He rummaged through a drawer and finally found
it; he seemed to be writing a long time. When he handed it back, he had
written "For Harriet, A pleasure working with you on this one -- and...." followed
by a slightly naughty remark. I think I'll keep it to myself...for a while.
Don't ask; I won't tell...yet. Nothing terrible, just terribly cute. I
just don't trust the internet, you know how things get blown out of proportion.
Stage 5 was beautifully decorated, with lighted Christmas trees, a colorful
winter scene mural and a large red and gold chair for Santa, who came to
greet the children who seemed to be everywhere. A group of merrily clothed
choralers assembled to serenade us with appropriate Christmas carols.
And the caterers, who cooked the special meal, as always outdid themselves.
Everyone we knew from the past and present seemed to be there, stopping by
our table as we shared what had happened since last we met, in some cases,
since last year. Since we decided to leave before the rest of the cast was due,
because of their late evening call times, we didn't get a chance to see
everyone. But the good news is: we have a lot more episodes to film.
Time goes too quickly, and it gets dark too soon during winter, so we left
to confront the freeway once more, Rosemary who is always so kind to drive and
myself, Everyone said we don't come to the set often enough, and with such
warm welcomes, their words are like a siren song. I have one more promise
to keep, so it won't be too long, and I'll be happy to let you know about it
soon.
Wishing all good things to you and your families in the coming New Year,
Best, Harriet
