Pharrell Williams - In My Mind
Pharrell Williams has blazed a career to the top of the charts as a
mega-platinum producer, songwriter and multi-instrumental musician in the
Neptunes and N.E.R.D. His first solo album, 'In My Mind' features guest
appearances by Gwen Stefani, Jay-Z, Daddy Yankee, and Slim Thug.
The album is released with two distinct sides: one with seven Hip Hop
tracks[under his alter-ego Skateboard P] and the other hosting seven RnB
tracks.
True to his persona, Pharrell not only produced but also played all
instrumental parts, and handled programming and mixing duties. To us mere
mortals, it's just mind-blowing. Lead (hip hop) single 'Can I have it Like
That' featuring Gwen Stefani, is a grinding instant smash already shaking
dance floors; second (or lead R&B) single 'Angel' showcases his soaring, sexy
falsetto over an infectious bouncy piano loop. The trademark stripped-down
percussion-heavy production is finessed throughout, and only a guest
appearance by pal Jamie Cullum sits a little oddly.
This is the sound of the bar being raised, again. Effortlessly.
With all of the of the street heads bantering back and forth about the
release date, it is sure to be in the conversation of CD of the year.
