Erykah Badu Tweets Unhappiness With Hip-Hop

Erykah Badu is certainly one songstress who knows more than a thing or two
about hip-hop. And she's not happy.
The Dallas-born Grammy Award winner got her start in the music business as an
MC before launching her R&B career. She was bringing a beat box to her shows
way before Kanye West toyed with that MPC at this year’s MTV Video Music
Awards. And, she’s been romantically involved and has had children with
three rappers, including Outkast’s Andre 3000, The D.O.C and Jay Electronica.
But, more significantly, the ‘Window Seat’ singer’s sound has been heavily
influenced by hip-hop culture thanks to notable collaborations with the late
producer J Dilla, her ex-beau Common and Dead Prez to name a few.
Recently, Badu took to Twitter to vent her frustration with today’s rap
music scene. Apparently, it’s sounding a bit too techno for her taste.
“How ya'll gone stand by and let our music turn into pop techno cornball ass
music?” she questioned. “We don’t own our own music no more. Come to think
of it, did we EVER own it?”
She continued, “These rappers ought to be shame of they damn selves. I’m
talkin’ ‘bout the MCs rappin’ over this pop techno music. I believe in
pimpin’ the system, but gotdamn! Not like this.”
Badu explained that she does love house and techno music “as a side dish”
but that she feels it is being served as “the main course.”
“Yes no one wants to be poor again,” she tweeted. “Artist have to
sacrifice integrity of the music sometimes to make ends meet. This is
understood, but got damn now, if you’ve never tasted good p---y, you’[re]
satisfied with asshole.”
Despite her current dislike with hip-hop, Badu is still keeping her love for
music alive.
Last night (October 14), she performed a mini-set at the Hennessy Artistry
Halo finale event at New York’s Cipriani alongside Eve and The Roots. Her
album, New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh is in stores now.
