So, what does the series’ original star think about the pending big-screen reboot? The Globe and Mail caught up with Amanda Tapping, who played Samantha Carter in both Stargate television shows for more than a decade, to talk about original producers Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich’s plans to start with a clean slate and a new film. Tapping said she’s definitely interested in being involved, though her phone isn’t exactly ringing off the hook. Check out an excerpt from the interview below: “Interest? Yes. Involvement? No. Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich have taken the property back. I don’t think they disliked the television series so much. But it wasn’t their vision. The rights had gone to MGM. Brad Wright and Jon Glassner got a hold of it and ran with it, successfully. I mean: 17 seasons of television. But I think Emmerich and Devlin are probably happy to have it back. Certainly no one has been calling any of the Stargate actors, saying, ‘Hey. I’ve got a part for you.’ It would be nice, but no.” If you’re unfamiliar, Devlin and Emmerich made the original 1994 film the series was based on, and their original plan for a trilogy of films was scuttled in favor of a television show with a different creative team. Now that SG-1 has finally run its course, and spinoff shows Atlantis and Universe are also off the air, the duo hope to reclaim the franchise and bring it back to the big screen with a creative reset. We’ve already debated the pros and cons at length, and we’re obviously excited to see the ‘Gate returning — but it’s still a shame it’ll come at the cost of all those years of fun stories and continuity.
