but recently he received much recognition (won the Golden Globe) with the
score to Moulin Rouge (he should have been Oscar nominated)

HOT on the heels of his award-munching Moulin Rouge soundtrack, Glasgow film
composer Craig Armstrong releases his second solo album.
He's never as interesting on his own as he is putting music to pictures, unfortunately. There's something annoyingly basic about his trademark orchestral crescendos, often little more than an entire string section playing epic chords - impressively grandiose the first time,
pretty wearing by the fifth.
Luckily, as on his debut, The Space Between Us,
he has plenty of collaborators to add colour.
The ones that work best, oddly, are the least famous.
Reducing U2's Stay to just Bono and those epic chords,
Armstrong replaces the subtle grandeur of the original with something
a bit self-conscious and pompous. Much better is David McAlmont's torch song Snow (McAlmont has always been perfect for cinematic melodrama).
Maybe this is the problem with Armstrong; he's brilliant at making big, film
music, but he can't quite bring himself to shrink it, even when appropriate. -
