20/02/2011 - Adele equals Beatles’ record to lead Official Charts Brits Bonanza Adele’s Someone Like You rockets up the Official Singles Chart from last week ’s number 47 to become the UK’s new number one after her powerful live television performance at last Tuesday’s Brit Awards, while her current album 21 heads the Official Albums Chart for a fourth week, the Official Charts Company announces today. Not content with achieving the chart double of simultaneous number ones in the nation’s Official Singles and Official Albums charts, the twenty-two-year-old artist boasts two more Top 5 hits this week; her single Rolling In The Deep and her debut album 19 are each at number four in their respective charts. Adele is the first living artist to achieve the feat of two Top 5 hits in both the Official Singles Chart and the Official Albums Chart simultaneously since The Beatles back in January 1964 when their singles I Want To Hold Your Hand and She Loves You were numbers two and five and their albums With The Beatles and Please Please Me were numbers one and two. 太扯了 這女人!!!! Adele’s phenomenal achievement spearheads a huge surge in sales for all the artists who won or performed at the Brit Awards 2011. Total album sales for Brits’ artists were up 70% week on week with Laura Marling’s album I Speak Because I Can recording the biggest chart leap from last week’s number 80 to this week’s number 21. Meanwhile, downloads of Brits performances by Take That (Kidz), Adele (Someone Like You), Mumford & Sons (Timshel), Plan B (She Said Prayin’), Tinie Tempah (We Bring The Stars Out featuring Labrinth and Eric Turner), Arcade Fire (Ready To Start) and Cee-Lo Green & Paloma Faith (Forget You) have sold over 90,000 copies in just over four days since being made available immediately after the live television show. The Brits Awards also make their mark in today’s Official Compilations Albums Chart with the Brit Awards 2011 collection climbing to this week’s number one from last week’s number three. Martin Talbot, Managing Director, Official Charts Company, said: “It is a fantastic week for both Adele and the Brits. For Adele to match a record of the Beatles is an extraordinary, historic achievement. The Brits has truly impacted on the music market this year, across the seven live performance downloads and in the album sales of both performers and winners.” Geoff Taylor, Chief Executive of the BPI, said: "This year's BRITs showed that Britain continues to shine brightly with new musical talent. Adele's breathtaking performance has deservedly taken her to No.1, and all the winners and performers have seen a boost in sales. This is good news for the business, but also for good causes, as all proceeds from the BRITs performances go to charity for the first month. " Elsewhere in the Official Singles Chart Top 10, there is just one new entry, Best International Female Artist Rihanna climbs to this week’s number six from last week’s number 11 with S&M while double Brit winner Tinie Tempah features on the JLS single Eyes Wide Shut which re-enters the Official Singles Chart Top 10 climbing to this week’s number eight from last week’s 17.
