這是一個PUNK小店員遇見搖滾明星的真實事件
THE STROKES are playing in Columbia tonight.
One of the band members came into the record store where I work today. He had s
ome chick with him that I'm not sure if she was his girlfriend or a part of the
band entourage.
They shopped around a bit, and then the girl came up to the counter with a ROBER
T JOHNSON LP boxset.
She says: "I'm with THE STROKES and one of the members wants to buy this boxset,
but he was wondering if he could get it for $30 instead of $40."
I say "uh... no."
I was totally pissed that these dudes think they can get special treatment becau
se they're rock stars in some podunk town.
Then I back it up with "uh... I think those guys can probably afford to pay regu
lar price for a record."
the girl responds: "that's a popular misconception... these guys don't have a l
ot of money... they're on tour and they're just starting out..." blah, blah blah
...
I just laughed in her face and turned to ring up the obviously extremely poor e
lderly black man that had no problem paying full price for his AL GREEN cassette
s.
It really burns my ass, because despite the fact that they were playing a show
that night that had a huge guarantee, and despite the fact that major labels ha
ve been in bidding wars over this band (I know these guys are fucking making mo
ney)... despite all that, these were all rich trust fund kids before they even h
ad their little TELEVISION/VELVET UNDERGROUND tribute act.
FUCK THEM.
Epilogue: the guy did end up buying a BILLIE HOLIDAY greatest hits LP, but not
the boxset. Ya know, I'm pretty fucking poor... but if I want something and I h
ave the money to buy it, I buy it. If I don't have the money to buy it, I don't
... and I sure as fuck wouldn't have my girlfriend of whatever try and haggle w
ith staff of an independent record store to get money knocked off the price. Wh
o are these people that think they are owed special treatment for being in a fuc
king band?!
