Oasis Scores Seventh Straight U.K. No. 1
Oct. 13, 2008 , 11:30 AM ET
Paul Sexton, London
Oasis made its customary debut atop the U.K. album chart yesterday (Oct. 12)
with "Dig Out Your Soul" (Big Brother), as Pink's "So What" (LaFace) started
a second week at No. 1 on the singles chart.
The Oasis album continues the band's record of having reached No. 1 on the
U.K. bestsellers with each of its seven studio albums, a run going back to
the 1994 debut "Definitely Maybe." The first single from the new release,
"The Shock of the Lightning," fell from its No. 4 debut to No. 16.
"Soul" ends Kings of Leon's two-week run at the top with "Only by the Night"
(Hand Me Down/Sony Music). Will Young's "Let It Go" (19/RCA), which opened at
No. 2 last week, was also nudged down a place, but Rihanna's long-running
"Good Girl Gone Bad" (Def Jam) moved up 5-4. James Morrison's "Songs For You,
Truths For Me" (Polydor) fell two places from last week's No. 3 debut.
Bob Dylan's new two-CD compilation "Tell Tale Signs -- Bootleg Series Volume 8"
(Columbia) opened at a more than respectable No. 9, while British dance act
Chicane's "The Best Of 1996-2008" (Modena) started at No. 16.
As the Pink single added to her total of more than 2.4 million singles sold
in the U.K., Kings of Leon's former No. 1 "Sex on Fire" held at No. 2 and
Sugababes' "Girls" (Universal Island) improved 4-3. Rihanna's "Disturbia,"
which fell 3-6 last week, moved back to No. 4 and Kaiser Chiefs' "Never Miss
a Beat" (B-Unique/Universal), the first single from their third album,
"Off With Their Heads," debuted at No. 5. The album is released in the U.K.
next Monday.
Also bouncing back was Ne-Yo's "Miss Independent" (Def Jam), which after
falling 9-11 last week, improved to No. 6, and "Cookie Jar"
(Decaydance/Fueled By Ramen) by Gym Class Heroes featuring the-Dream,
which has a three-week sequence of 6-10-9. The next highest new entry on the
new singles survey was Snow Patrol's "Take Back the City" (Fiction/Universal)
at No. 15.
Metallica's "Death Magnetic" (Vertigo/Universal) secures a fourth week atop
Billboard's European Top 100 Albums chart, while there's a ninth week at No. 1
on Eurochart Hot 100 Singles for Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl" (Virgin).
