[創作] The Family of Grammar
Verbs are dead when
Enshrined in a dictionary.
They come into being when
We breathe them into life.
Nouns are clothes
Embodying things seen or unseen.
We are clad as children
Parents, teachers, and else.
Prepositions are nomads
Roaming a savanna –
Searching for nouns
To keep warm in winter.
Adverbs are playwrights
Wielding their magical quills
And setting scenes
For the play of A-Z.
Adjectives are painters
Pumping a river of hues
To characterize different worlds –
Real, surreal, impressionist or else.
Connectives are doctors
Performing generative operations
To extend a sentence’s life,
Before Death drops a period.
Auxiliaries are pianists
Playing chamber music
Under different modes imparting
Certainty, probability, or obligation.
Determiners are the GPS,
Locating and identifying
A target’s state – definite or indefinite
Or given or new.
Participles are retired soldiers –
Failing to fight again but
Retelling and spinning tales
Of their glorious past as verbs.
Subordinators are social class makers
Nicely marrying each clause
But cruelly drawing a line
Between what is main and subordinate.
Exclamations are Santa Claus,
Rarely knocking on our door.
But once visiting, they
Refresh us by surprise!
