今年的陣容是 Michelle Branch, Gloria Estefan, Chaka Khan, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Lee Ann Womack, Chrissie Hynde Jennifer Love Hewitt 幸好只是主持人 Hynde Rocks Girls With Guitars Khan, Branch rock for Breast Cancer Awareness Month Thursday night's taping at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles of the third annual Women Rock: Girls With Guitars concert (to be broadcast on Lifetime on October 25th) proved one thing, the producers are smart enough to recognize a winning formula and run with it. The highlights from the first two years of the show -- part of Lifetime TV's Stop Breast Cancer Awareness month -- centered largely on the crossing of generations and genres through unexpected collaborations such as rocker girl Chrissie Hynde and country star Lee Ann Womack teaming up for a duet on Patsy Cline's "Crazy" or Womack and Gloria Estefan uniting for a moving version of Womack's hit "I Hope You Dance." The show, which was hosted by Jennifer Love Hewitt, and featured Michelle Branch, the Pretenders, Estefan, Chaka Khan, and Womack, opened with all the ladies save Hewitt (who sang later) performing Khan's "I'm Every Woman." As has also been the case at past years, this year's show was about paying homage to the veterans in the house, in this case Hynde and Khan. The first half belonged to the booming soulful vocals of Khan, who tore the place up with her own "Ain't Nobody" then showed her tender side with a cover of Paul McCartney's "Maybe I'm Amazed," which was dedicated to Linda McCartney. Khan also displayed her versatility, joining Estefan for a medley of Estefan's "Coming Out of the Dark" and a song that Khan made a hit, "Through the Fire." If the first half was Khan's show, the second half was all about Hynde, who made her first solo appearance with a crooning version of the classic "What a Wonderful World." Following a string of performances including Hewitt's spirited rendition of "Can I Go Now," Womack's "I Need Something," and Branch's one selection, "Goodbye to You," Hynde officially took over, with the Pretenders coming out to back her. The elegant ballad "I'll Stand by You" featured appearances by Estefan and Branch, the latter of whom stayed on stage for the rocking "Kid" from the Pretenders' classic debut album. Perhaps it was that Branch and Hynde were clad in identical outfits of black tank tops, blue jeans, and boots, but standing side by side on stage, the pair looked surprisingly symbiotic. In fact, the way that Branch held her own with one of rock's original riot grrrls couldn't help but make one wonder if Branch has some rocking out in her future. The requisite group finales were two-tiered, with an acoustic rendition of Bob Dylan's "Forever Young" and a spirited "I'll Take You There," another track made famous by Khan. Of course, at shows of this nature, it's impossible to please everyone. More Michelle Branch would have been nice, and a few more rockers from the Pretenders to lift the energy after all the changeovers also would have been wise, but the spirit of collaboration that permeates this particular event more than compensates for any small disappointments.
