Jiva consist of lead Bassist Khari Simmons , vocalist Rhonda Thomas , Paige Martin , and Alex Lattimore , Bob Brockman on trumpet , Forrest Robinson on drums , Paul Shapiro and Vincent D’Agostino on flute , and Julius Speed on Fender Rhodes. There are a host of other musicians that sit in to play with them as well. Jiva debut album was well worth the wait. A mature, well put together LP that does not collect dust. Jiva’s Sun & Moon is the perfect mix of Soul and Jazz. All vocalist are very pleasing to the ear, and they all sing their selections with confidence. Khari Simmons and Co. has created a “Timeless” classic here. The whole LP is a great listen from end to end. Words that come to mind when trying to describe Jiva’s Sun & Moon are smooth, soulful, and sincere. All 9 tracks are standouts. Personal favorites are Confessions of a Man, Daydreamer, Sun & Moon, and the classic Love chooses Lovers. Please support Jiva !!! You will not be disappointed. The rest of the world knows Jiva !!! We introduce you to Jiva – a band whose moniker translates “the spirit within” perfectly blends Soul, Dance and Jazz to create a new sound for the masses. Hailing from Atlanta, GA Jiva’s Fender Rhodes-driven rhythm section conjures R&B, House, Bossa Nova, and Drum & Bass beats that can move any crowd while the soulful vocal 4-piece section brings back memories of Brazil ’66 and the 5th Dimension. The jazz infused horn section rounds out this trinity of sound that skillfully presents musical gems written and orchestrated by the band’s leader and bassist, Khari Simmons (also a member of India.Arie’s rhythm section). Their first release on Giant Step Records, “Stars” became one of Giant Step’s most respected and sought-after 12” releases. Complete with remixes by Tauriva and France’s Tom & Joyce, “Stars” became a favorite for the likes of Rainer Truby, Nik Weston, and Frankie Valentine, and KPFK’s Kristi Lomax to name a few. The follow-up, ‘The Love E.P.’, introduced three new cuts to the world: “Love Choose Lovers, “The Goodbye Song” and “I Realized”, the latter a lush bossanova number. Their next 12-inch featured an excellent Louie Vega EOL remix of “Stars”… now a definitive club classic. Also included was the soul-stomping Extended Mix of the original version of “I Realized”, which garnered major support from DJs such as Joey Negro and Marques Wyatt. Jiva continues to be a part of the Giant Step family, making an appearance on each of Giant Step’s “Simply Good Music” compilations, with each appearance yielding a brand new track. Their first appearance on ‘Simply Good Music Vol. 1’, “Confessions of a Man” was an airy jazz track laid beneath beautiful female harmonies.
