http://tinyurl.com/yfqhdek Queen Says Make It So As Patrick Stewart Knighted Patrick Stewart, best known for his role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the TV show "Star Trek: The Next Generation," will now be known as Sir Patrick. The Cabinet Office made the announcement on Thursday. The 69-year-old native of Yorkshire, England, tops the list of those receiving New Year's honors from Britain's Queen Elizabeth II. In addition to playing Capt. Picard, Patrick Stewart is also known as playing Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men movies. Charles Xavier, or "Professor X" is a telepath, but Patrick Stewart probably didn't see this coming. While Stewart is best known for his roles in popular TV and movies, as evidenced by Star Trek and the X-Men, those are not his first love. Rather, it's the stage, and classics such as Shakespeare that he prefers. In addition to Patrick Stewart's knighthood, others will receive somewhat lesser honors. Ross Brawn, who started the Brawn GP Formula 1 team that won the constructors' championship in 2009, will receive an OBE, which stands for Officer of the Order of the British Empire. The 2008 F1 champion, Lewis Hamilton, received an MBE, which stands for Member of the Order of the British Empire, last year. There are additional F1 awards that were announced today. Jenson Button, who won the 2009 Formula 1 drivers championship, and who races with the Brawn-Mercedes team. will receive an MBE. British fashion designer Amanda Wakeley will receive an OBE. Cath Kidston and Luella Bartley, fellow fashion designers, will receive MBEs. Also receiving an MBE are Rose Gray and Ruth Rogers, who together started the River Cafe in London, along the Thames. To explain all the ranking, it is as follows: A knighthood is the highest honor. Men are made knights, after which they are called "sirs," and women are made "dames. Then comes the CBE, which stands for Commander of the Order of the British Empire. The OBE and MBE follow respectively.
