Kanye West up for eight Grammy nominations
Whether the Chi-Town representative wins or loses, the stage is set for a
dramatic Grammy night 2008 as Thursday in Los Angeles it was announced that
Kanye West is nominated for eight awards.
West, who in November lost his mother to complications from plastic surgery,
bests English songstress Amy Winehouse, who's ‘Back to Black' set garned her
six nominations, and his ‘Graduation' LP is up for album of the year. Other
top Grammy nominees include Foo Fighters, Paul McCartney, T-Pain, Timbaland
and West's Universal/Def Jam label-mates Jay-Z and Rihanna.
Jay-Z's standing as CEO/President/lead hip hop act of Def Jam Records almost
guarantees that he'll leave Staples Center victorious "even in defeat." His
female equal in corporate entertainment omnipresence, Beyonce, is up for
record of the year ("Irreplaceable") next to Rihanna's Jay-Z assisted
"Umbrella" and "What Goes Around Comes Around" by Justin Timberlake.
West emerged triumphant in his soundscan battle with 50 Cent, was able to
muster some self deprecating humor this fall on SNL (with co-host Lebron
James) and continued touring even after his beloved mother, Prof. Donda West,
passed away.
Atlanta Records artists T.I. and, Jay-Z favorite, Lupe Fiasco are also
nominated for Grammies. The 2008 Grammy Awards show takes place Feb. 10 at
Los Angeles' Staples Center.
